About Chatham-Kent Community Gardens |
|
Food Link Chatham Kent Community Gardens are committed to providing the necessary land, education, tools and seeds to allow the citizens of Chatham-Kent, through their own efforts, to have access to safe, nutritious and appetizing fruits and vegetables. There are currently 8 community gardens in Chatham-Kent, our goal is to place gardens in all 23 of Chatham-Kent’s communities. Community gardens, often called urban gardens, are shared plots within an urban or neighbourhood setting. Gardeners share tools, knowledge and labour to produce food for themselves and others. There are an estimated 18,000 community gardens throughout Canada and the United States. The Foodlink Chatham-Kent Community Gardens began in 2006 in Chatham with one garden, has blossomed to eight gardens, and continues to grow as knowledge of this valuable and dynamic resource increases. Gardeners may garden communally or ask for an allotment for themselves, their family or a group to work together. All gardeners sign a code of conduct. Community Gardens benefits include: · Relief to home economies by helping people provide some of their own groceries · Exercise, fresh air and stress relief · Stronger, healthier neighbourhoods through the interaction of neighbours · A cleaner, greener environment by reducing food miles, teaching sustainable gardening methods and greening unused spaces · Job skills, the ability to grow food is a real and practical skill |
